What is an Asset Loan?

Asset finance allows you to purchase business equipment, vehicles, or other machinery without paying the full amount upfront. The asset usually acts as security for the loan.

Things to consider

Asset Condition (New vs Used)

Some lenders offer better terms for new equipment than for used. The asset type, age, and condition can affect loan approval and interest rates.

Loan Structure Options

Common structures include chattel mortgages, leases, and hire purchase. Each has different tax and accounting implications, we help you choose what’s best for your business.

Repayment Flexibility

You may be able to tailor repayments to your business cash flow, e.g., seasonal repayments for agriculture or balloon payments to reduce upfront costs.

Tax Deductions & GST

Depending on the asset and loan type, repayments or depreciation may be tax-deductible. We recommend discussing with your accountant to maximise benefits.

Equipment earns. Waiting does not.

If your business needs a vehicle, machine or piece of equipment to take the next job, paying cash is often the most expensive option, it drains the working capital that keeps everything else running. Asset finance puts the equipment to work now and matches the cost to the income it generates.

For most Australian small businesses the vehicle of choice is a chattel mortgage: the business owns the asset from day one, claims the interest and depreciation, and the finance is secured by the asset itself, not your house.

What we finance

  • Vehicles: utes, vans, trucks and cars for business use.
  • Yellow goods and machinery: excavators, bobcats, forklifts, agricultural equipment.
  • Fit-outs and technology: medical and dental equipment, kitchen fit-outs, IT.
  • Fast, low-doc approvals: established ABNs with clean credit can often be approved on minimal financials within 24–48 hours.

Tax treatment such as depreciation and any instant asset write-off thresholds depends on current legislation and your circumstances, confirm with your accountant.

Asset finance questions, answered

With a chattel mortgage your business owns the asset from day one and the lender holds security over it, you claim depreciation and interest. With a lease, the financier owns the asset and you pay to use it. Chattel mortgages suit most owner-operators; leases suit businesses that want assets off their books or refreshed often.

It is harder under two years of ABN history, but far from impossible, some lenders take a director’s prior industry experience, a deposit, or property ownership into account. Expect fewer options and slightly higher rates, improving as your history builds.

For established businesses with clean credit, commonly 24–48 hours, many lenders approve replacement vehicles and standard equipment on a low-doc basis without full financials up to certain amounts.

A residual lowers the regular repayment and leaves a lump sum at the end, useful for matching cash flow to an asset you will upgrade anyway. On assets you will keep long past the loan, a residual usually just defers cost. We model it both ways so you decide on numbers.

The right equipment shouldn’t have to wait for cash flow.
